Max Riemelt: She’d ask the most random questions. She doesn't only give you directions, she would also ask you questions as we were shooting. Teresa Palmer: She definitely gave us freedom to put our own stuff in there. Did Cate let you guys infuse some of your own selves or your perspectives into these characters, too? I'd love to talk a little bit about Clare in terms of the evolution that we see. That's why you understand why she falls for him in this weird way. He's a human being with layers and complexity. You see him care about this little boy's well-being. In fact, he'd be irritated that someone would take his attention away from the job that he's currently doing. In a different movie, the captor wouldn't care about someone else. One of my favorite scenes, I actually only just picked it up the second time I watched it, was when we're in the forest and it's snowing and he has such empathy for that little boy who hurts his leg. Teresa Palmer: Things in this movie are not so black and white, just being a story about the captor and the captive. He’s not a stereotype at all, and I appreciated that. Max Riemelt: Yeah, he's a regular human being, very complex. You can see why Clare initially wouldn't even recognize what’s happening to her because of his likeability. There are some very deeply disturbing things that happen with him, but yet, there are still these moments of kindness and he’s very charismatic, too. Max, your character is very complicated, obviously. You get to think for yourself what it might feel like to be in this terrible situation like Clare, and how you might deal with it. To get to feel how Clare sees the world and how she could feel, might feel. All of this is from out of her eyes, out of her perspective, and that's what I liked the most. Max Riemelt: Yeah, but also there’s the perspective of Clare, and that is subjective. Teresa Palmer: There’s so much attention to detail. It allows the audience to get to think for themselves, especially as you’re digging through all the details Cate put into this movie. It is in a way unconventional that you don't see sometimes the horror in the face or that certain stuff when it comes to these kinds of movies. That's the lesson I learned yesterday while watching the movie at the premiere. What is not shown is sometimes even more important. Max Riemelt: It was, but you also never know what is going to come out in the editing. Going into this, was that something you guys recognized as well? We’ve seen a lot of movies with this idea of somebody being abducted, but it's always very entrenched in this big violent act. What you guys managed to create in this movie is just wonderful. Great to speak with you both, and congrats on the film. In Park City, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with both Palmer and Riemelt about their experiences working on Berlin Syndrome, their collaborative relationship together and with director Shortland, and the complicated connection their characters share in the film. Her latest project, Cate Shortland’s Berlin Syndrome, recently premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival and follows her character, Clare, after she finds herself being subtly abducted following a night of passion with Andi (Max Riemelt), a teacher who wants to keep her tucked away from the world forever after their romp. Over the last few years, I’ve come to admire actress Teresa Palmer’s body of work, as she’s consistently taken on intriguing projects like Knight of Cups (with Terrence Malick), Warm Bodies, and last year’s Lights Out (as I entered the interview, she mentioned that work on a script for the sequel is currently underway). The singer was 78 when he died, on December 25, 1995, of acute respiratory failure, at his home in Beverly Hills. It is hard to beat that 1959 version, though. Martin liked it so much, he re-recorded a version in 1966, as part of The Dean Martin Christmas Album. His 1959 recording is the latest in a series of classic holiday tunes to receive a new music video treatment for the festive season, created in 2019 by animation studio Fantoons.Ĭarly Simon and Rod Stewart have also recorded successful versions of “Let It Snow” Simon’s 2005 take on the song is unusual in being sung from the point of view of the host instead of the guest. But it is Martin’s version, which was arranged by Gus Levene and conducted by Hy Lesnick, that became a festive classic. The song was first recorded for RCA Victor in 1945 by Vaughn Monroe, and versions by Woody Herman and Connee Boswell soon followed. ‘Oh, the weather outside is frightful/But the fire is so delightful/And since we’ve got no place to go/Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.’ Now why three ‘Let it snow’s? Why not two or four? Because three is lyric.” The many versions of Let It Snow! He said, ‘Why don’t we stay here and write a winter song.’ I went to the typewriter. In the book Songwriters On Songwriting, Cahn recalled how the famous tune came about: “‘Why don’t we go down to the beach and cool off?’ I asked Jule. He won four Oscars: for “Three Coins In The Fountain,” written for the 1954 film of the same title “All the Way,” written for the film The Joker Is Wild “High Hopes,” from A Hole In The Head and “Call Me Irresponsible,” from the film Papa’s Delicate Condition.Īll those Academy winners pale in comparison, however, to the long-term success of “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!,” which was penned in sunny California. Lyricist Cahn and composer Styne were two of the greatest songwriters of that golden age of popular music: at his peak, Cahn was reportedly America’s highest-paid songwriter, often earning more than $1,000 a word. Fourteen years before Martin went into the studio, the song had been written by Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne on America’s hottest day of 1945. But Hiromitsu Shinkawa said his wife had been swept away when the tsunami hit as they returned home to gather possessions after the quake. Japanese troops rescued a 60-year-old man found 10 miles out to sea on the roof of his home. There were welcome moments of celebration as survivors were reunited, but no good news was unalloyed by grief. "I managed to survive but my daughter was washed away. "I grabbed my daughter's hand but I lost my grip when I was swept away by the debris and water," she said. With phone services still down in many areas, survivors made their way to civic centres to check boards with names of others known to have survived and those who had died.Įtsuko Oyama, who was rescued by a neighbour after the wave swept her 400 metres from her home, struggled to hold back tears as she spoke to NHK. As many as 190 people had already been exposed, a Japanese official told Reuters, with 22 confirmed to have suffered contamination. Neither would necessarily breach the reactor's containment vessel, and authorities played down the likelihood of a substantial release of radiation. It was a tragedy that Ethiopia was forced to endure and a reminder of the power of imperialism and the importance of defending one's sovereignty.Authorities were fighting to keep temperatures down in multiple reactors at two plants in Fukushima prefecture, warning that a partial meltdown was possible in one and that there was a risk of a second hydrogen explosion in another. The war devastated Ethiopia, with thousands of people killed and the country's infrastructure destroyed. The Italian occupation of Ethiopia lasted until 1941 when Allied forces liberated the country. The war was a significant blow to Ethiopia's sovereignty, forcing the country to accept Italian rule. The Italian forces quickly captured the capital of Addis Ababa and declared victory in May 1936. The Ethiopians fought bravely and fiercely but were ultimately no match for the Italians. Ethiopia, a sovereign nation then, was ill-prepared to defend itself against the Italian troops, equipped with modern weapons and air power. The invasion was part of Italy's plan to expand its African colonial empire, and General Rodolfo Graziani led the Italian forces. In World War II, Italy invaded Ethiopia in October 1935, marking the beginning of a brutal five-month conflict. In South Africa, Black workers began a lengthy march up the continent to assist their African brothers in Ethiopia. As battles raged between Ethiopians and Italians in Africa, so it did between Blacks and Italians in the streets of New York. Ethiopia was invaded by fascist Italy under Benito Mussolini, confirming the suspicion that the war had racial motivation and sought to extinguish the last light of African power in the world. Farming is not just one of the worst climate offenders, it is also at high risk from climate change. Verra has released a new Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) methodology that enables farmers and ranchers to access new revenue streams from farming carbon. "What we really focus on is: How do we bring new revenue streams to the farmer as they make this journey to sustainability?" said Indigo Ag CEO Ron Hovsepian.įarmers are encouraged to plant cover crops and reduce tillage to improve soil health, water quality and biodiversity. This can help make crops more resilient to global warming. Indigo Agriculture raised another 360 million for a carbon credit system that incentivizes farmers to grow food with environmentally sustainable methods. Buyers so far include JPMorgan Chase, The North Face and Barclays. Indigo AG introduced its first tranche of farm soil carbon credits just a few weeks ago, with its program producing 20 thousand tonnes in credits, or emissions offsets. The amounts differ depending on the farm and the current price in the carbon credit markets. Then, it pre-pays the farmers an amount that is then verified by the Climate Action Reserve, a California-based environmental organization that monitors the North American carbon market to ensure integrity, transparency and financial value. Maple Leaf Foods and Epiphany Craft Malt will purchase verified agricultural carbon credits to further their sustainability objectives. Here's how it works: Indigo Ag takes measurements to determine how many carbon credits each farm would produce, and therefore how much money the farmers would get. Indigo Agriculture announced additional multi-year commitments to purchase verified agricultural carbon credits through Indigo Carbon. Several media outlets unfairly condemned the picture as a mediocre cash-grab meant to ride the coattails of the found footage films that inspired it, while others were even more critical of its murky time travel logic. While the movie would ultimately rake in nearly three times its budget at the box-office, this success didn’t extend to its critical reception. Not only that, but it was also a bit of a gamble in the financial department, with the film boasting a surprisingly large budget for a Found Footage flick despite not featuring any superpowered characters or city-destroying monsters. Produced through Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes, Project Almanac was already an unusual endeavor coming out of the gate, being the production company’s second non-horror film after 2014’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot. Naturally, hormone-influenced shenanigans ensue as David and his friends decide to travel back in time for personal gain – only to discover that even the smallest changes can have disastrous consequences for the future. If you haven’t heard of it before, Project Almanac tells the story of a group of teenagers involved in a time travelling conspiracy after David ( Jonny Weston) uncovers blueprints for a time machine that his father ( Gary Weeks) was working on before his mysterious death. That’s why I appreciate rare exceptions like Dean Israelite’s Project Almanac, a sci-fi Found Footage romp that takes advantage of subjective filmmaking in an admirable attempt at updating age-old time travel tropes for a new generation. Snider says hopes to re-introduce a tour to coincide with the sequel.įrom absurd dashcam footage to amusing cat videos, it’s pretty safe to assume that the vast majority of real-world recordings are completely banal in nature – so why is it that Found Footage movies are almost exclusively associated with the horror genre? The soundtrack of the 1998 movie included the likes of System Of A Down, Slipknot, Kid Rock, Twisted Sister, Megadeth, Marilyn Manson and Pantera, and led to a ‘Strangeland’ tour. The movie will be set in the “ underworld of body modification fetishists, amid the secret sado-masochistic freak societies of perverted pleasures that lurk just underneath the veneer of respectable society.” Strangeland: Disciple will come complete with an NC-17 rating right off the bat, and Snider promises it will be “ultra-intense”. `Strangeland: Disciple’ comes 11 years after the original, and continues the story of a schizophrenic sexual sadist who lures victims via the Internet. Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider is set to revisit his role as Captain Howdy in horror flick `Strangeland’, having written the sequel which will go into production this year, according to NME. While a sequel has been in talks for years now, the Twisted Sister frontman is claiming production begins this year. While I absolutely hated the film back a decade ago, over the years I have found love for Dee Snider’s STRANGELAND, which is about a sadomasochistic predator who surfs the internet looking for on-line female victims. Engineers and constructors are crucial characters that can repair damaged vehicles and emplacements, build such defensive emplacements as anti-vehicle and anti-personnel gun turrets, and drop explosive mines. Medics and technicians can drop health packs (as they could in Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, Splash Damage's previous game) and revive fallen comrades. When aimed from zoom mode, the rocket launcher can automatically lock on to enemy vehicles and emplacements once you draw a bead on your target for several seconds. For instance, soldiers and aggressors can act as shock troopers by choosing an GDF assault rifle or strogg lacerator as a primary weapon or act as anti-vehicle characters by picking the rocket launcher. The strogg forces use alien technology, including many of the weapons featured in 2005's Quake 4, such as the hyperblaster minigun, the lightning gun (which fires a continuous stream of electricity), the nailgun (which now fires bursts of nails like a shotgun), and the dreaded railgun sniper weapon, which has an adjustable long-range zoom lens.Įach class plays a basic role, and assault and scout characters can also vary up their abilities by choosing different primary weapons. The human GDF forces mostly use conventional weapons, such as assault rifles and pistols. However, while these roles are roughly similar on both sides, they play out very differently in practice. Incoming! Enemy Territory: Quake Wars will offer land, sea, and air battles between the Earth's military and an army of aliens. In the game, you'll play either on the side of the GDF or the strogg in one of five primary roles: assault, medic, engineer, support, or scout known on the GDF side as soldier, medic, engineer, field ops, and covert ops and on the strogg side as aggressor, technician, constructor, oppressor, and infiltrator. More specifically, it takes place in the middle of a war between the human Global Defense Force (GDF) and the strogg, the alien race from 1997's Quake II. We recently had a chance to sit down with an updated version of the PC game and have much to report.Īs you may know from checking our previous coverage, Quake Wars takes place in the near future in the Quake first-person shooter universe. The next game from publisher Activision and developers Splash Damage and id Software, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, will push team-based gameplay even further with some intriguing new ideas and plenty of fast-paced shooter gameplay. Over time, more team-based shooters like Counter-Strike and the Battlefield series have encouraged players to act less like fools and more like a cohesive team by completing group objectives. If you take the running and gunning from a first-person perspective of a first-person shooter and make it a team effort, you usually end up with a bunch of players goofing around, not really trying to do anything together. |
